Scar revision: what can and cannot be improved

Scar revision aims to make a scar flatter, paler and better aligned with natural skin creases. It does not remove the scar, and any surgeon promising that is overselling.

- Silicone gel or sheeting for immature scars
- Steroid injection for raised or keloid scars
- Laser resurfacing to improve colour and texture
- Surgical revision to reposition or narrow the scar
Important
Most scars keep improving for twelve to eighteen months. Revision is usually best considered after that, not before.

When should I see a doctor about scarring?
Book a consultation if symptoms persist, get worse, wake you at night, or come with bleeding, fever or unexplained weight loss. Anything that does not settle within a few weeks is worth having looked at.
Will I need surgery?
Often not. Many conditions settle with medication, physiotherapy or a change in daily habits. Surgery is discussed when simpler measures have been tried, or when the problem is structural.
