Heavy periods: how much is too much?

Because nobody can compare their period with anyone else’s, heavy bleeding is often tolerated for years. A few practical markers help.

- Changing protection every hour or two
- Needing double protection
- Passing clots larger than a rupee coin
- Bleeding through to clothes or bedding
- Periods lasting more than seven days
Important
Heavy periods are a common cause of iron deficiency anaemia, which is worth testing for even if the bleeding itself feels manageable.

When should I see a doctor about heavy periods?
Book a consultation if symptoms persist, get worse, wake you at night, or come with bleeding, fever or unexplained weight loss. Anything that does not settle within a few weeks is worth having looked at.
Will I need surgery?
Often not. Many conditions settle with medication, physiotherapy or a change in daily habits. Surgery is discussed when simpler measures have been tried, or when the problem is structural.
