An inguinal hernia is a gap in the abdominal wall through which tissue pushes out, producing a bulge in the groin that often appears on coughing or standing.

A hernia is a mechanical problem. There is a hole, and holes in the abdominal wall do not close by themselves.

What to look for

  • A bulge that appears on straining and disappears when lying down
  • A dragging ache towards the end of the day
  • Discomfort when lifting or coughing

Important

A hernia that becomes hard, painful and irreducible, especially with vomiting, is an emergency. Go to hospital rather than waiting.

Can a hernia be managed without surgery?
Small, painless hernias are sometimes watched. Repair is advised when it grows, hurts, or limits what you can do.
Open or laparoscopic repair?
Both work well. Laparoscopic repair generally means less pain and a faster return to work, and suits bilateral or recurrent hernias particularly well.
