What should I do the week before laparoscopic surgery?

Most of the preparation for keyhole surgery is straightforward, but a few details — blood thinners in particular — need sorting out well before the day.

Review your medications
Tell the team about blood thinners, diabetes medication and any supplements. Some need stopping several days ahead.

Complete pre-operative tests
Blood tests, an ECG where indicated, and the anaesthetist review are usually done a few days before.

Arrange the practicalities
Plan someone to bring you home, and clear the first few days afterwards of anything heavy.
Speak to the general surgery team
Daycare procedures, cashless insurance, and consultations seven days a week at Gachibowli.
When should I see a doctor about surgery preparation?
Book a consultation if symptoms persist, get worse, wake you at night, or come with bleeding, fever or unexplained weight loss. Anything that does not settle within a few weeks is worth having looked at.
Will I need surgery?
Often not. Many conditions settle with medication, physiotherapy or a change in daily habits. Surgery is discussed when simpler measures have been tried, or when the problem is structural.
