Preventing kidney stones from coming back

Around half of people who form one kidney stone will form another within a decade. Most of that risk is modifiable.
What actually helps

Drink enough to keep urine pale
The single most effective measure. Aim for urine that is consistently light in colour.

Go easy on salt
High salt intake raises calcium in the urine, which encourages stone formation.

Do not cut out calcium
Dietary calcium binds oxalate in the gut. Restricting it usually makes stones more likely, not less.

Have the stone analysed
Prevention depends on stone type, so analysis turns general advice into specific advice.

When should I see a doctor about recurrent stones?
Book a consultation if symptoms persist, get worse, wake you at night, or come with bleeding, fever or unexplained weight loss. Anything that does not settle within a few weeks is worth having looked at.
Will I need surgery?
Often not. Many conditions settle with medication, physiotherapy or a change in daily habits. Surgery is discussed when simpler measures have been tried, or when the problem is structural.
