Most adults need roughly 25 to 30 grams of fibre a day. Most of us manage well under that — and the gap is a common reason for hard stools.

What that looks like in real meals

  • A bowl of dal — around 6g
  • Two rotis of whole wheat — around 4g
  • A guava or a pear with the skin — around 5g
  • A cup of cooked vegetables — around 4g
  • A handful of nuts or roasted chana — around 4g

Why adding it slowly matters

A sudden jump in fibre without extra fluid produces bloating, cramping and harder stools — the opposite of the intended effect. Increase by about 5g a week and raise water intake alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fibre supplement as good as food?
Supplements help when diet alone falls short, but whole foods bring fluid and other nutrients with them, so food first is the better default.
How much water should I drink with it?
Fibre works by holding water. Without roughly two to two and a half litres a day, extra fibre can make constipation worse rather than better.

Still unsure what is causing your symptoms?

A short consultation with a Lux proctology specialist can tell you what you are dealing with — and what, if anything, needs treating.
