Constipation becomes chronic when it lasts more than three months and affects how you eat, travel or plan your day. At that point it deserves investigating rather than managing indefinitely with laxatives.

Frequently asked questions
Are daily laxatives harmful?
Bulk-forming and osmotic laxatives are generally safe long term. Prolonged use of stimulant laxatives is worth reviewing with a doctor.
Could this be something other than diet?
Yes. Thyroid problems, some medications and pelvic floor dysfunction all cause constipation, which is why persistent symptoms are worth assessing.
